Usually, European coffee producers only buy green coffee from developing countries. The roasting, packaging and marketing of the coffee is done in Europe. Developing countries, acting only as raw material suppliers, are excluded from the value adding process. This is also the main reason why many farmers started hoarding their beans at this time of financial crisis hoping for better future prices - of course a potential contra-productive solution, because harvested coffee does not become better by storing it.

Different the project Solino Coffee
Solino is a wild grown handpicked coffee from the upper mountain regions of Ethiopia. It is a special blend coming from the regions of Harar, Yirgacheffe and Sidamo, roasted and packed directly after harvesting. The roasting process adheres to the Italian coffee making tradition. The unique and rich taste is aromatic and smooth with low acidity.  Ethiopia is world-renowned for the best coffee. Coffee producers usually only need to add a small percentage of Ethiopian coffee to their blends to improve taste. Solino, on the other hand, is 100 % Ethiopian coffee, which is also roasted and packed in Ethiopia, so that the added value completely remains in the country.

The purchase of this coffee avoids child labour, women´s suppression, and poverty in general, because the initiative generates qualified places of work. All in all, an impressive project, which not even the most well-known Trans-Fair-Initiatives are able to provide, because they only guarantee some higher wages to the farmers.
